Welcome to the St. Francis of Assistance Network (SFAN)

SFAN’s charter is twofold:

Immediately provide ways to help people cope with job loss, underemployment and the resulting financial and personal stresses.

A secondary purpose is to help people develop job search skills, so they are ready when the job market begins to improve.

We have a wide range of resources to help you with your job search, please take advantage of them:

Our web site: www.sfansfoa.org.

Most people go to the SFAN website to see if there are any jobs. The site contains a link to PeopleProp, a job posting service. Click on the PeopleProp line on the left. The web site allows you to choose “San Jose” and the number of miles you are willing to drive to get a job. On any given day there are openings at all levels of employment; in landscaping, construction, custodian, various engineering jobs and finance, sales, VP of Operations, and a whole raft of other opportunities.

The website has more than just employment services. It has job-hunting information in the Library, news and SFAN history and support resouces. The library has over 50 resource papers on writing resumes, interviewing techniques, and improving networking skills, general job information. Check them out.

Career Actions Network:

Career Actions Network (CAN) is a trusted job site. They send out almost daily postings of job opportunities. The job opportunities are sent in by volunteer members of CAN who spot job postings in their companies or by recruiters who are looking for candidates in the CAN membership.

You must join CAN for two reasons; you will get daily postings of job opportunities and you can post your resume for consideration by employers who have jobs. Recruiters are also trolling this site looking for candidates. The site is www.careeractionsnetwork.org.

Join LinkedIn:

If you are serious about your job search you must join LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. Founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking. As of February 11, 2010 LinkedIn had more than 60 million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

  • It is the largest professional networking site today.
  • It is a major sourcing tool for recruiters
  • Allows you to easily collect information for career investigations and interview preparation
  • Other LinkedIn users understand the importance of networking and are usually willing to help

If you are already a member, look for the SFAN LinkedIn Site: SFANSFOA. If you are not a LinkedIn member, you can join by going to www.linkedin.com

Join a Success Team: Several people want to form Success Teams. Please let Jim Degnan know if you are interested. Send him an email telling him the best time and place where you can meet. We do not need to meet at the church, in fact, the best most active Success Teams meet at each other’s homes. Jim Degnan: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Come to Training Meetings: From time to time, SFAN sponsors presentation by speakers and also training get-togethers. People meet to work on resumes, interview techniques and how to manage LinkedIN. The best way to do this is in a small group where we can work together to make you the best resume possible and help each other to make interviews easier. If you need to learn how to really run a computer or manage LinkedIn, please let us know. We will set up classes on an as-needed basis.

Finally: Please let others know about SFAN and get them signed up with us so they can get timely announcements and information about job-hunting resources
